Description: | Kaitocephalin (PF 1191) is a non-selective ionotropic glutamate receptor (iGluR) antagonist, the first discovered natural toxin with protective properties against excitotoxic-death of cultured neurons induced by NMDA or AMPA/kainate receptors; a more potent antagonist of NMDA receptors (IC50= 75 nM) than of AMPA receptors from cerebral cortex (IC50=242 nM) and from homomeric GluR3 subunits (IC50=502 nM); shows neuroprotective properties, and protects neurons by inhibiting excitotoxicity. |
